Appliance repair in Rockford, in short

Most appliance repairs in Rockford cost $100 to $430: a refrigerator $150 to $400, a washer $180 to $250, a dryer $100 to $430, a dishwasher $175 to $325 (Angi, 2026), plus a $70 to $130 service call. Rockford's water is very hard, about 377 mg/L in Illinois EPA samples, which is why dishwasher film, ice makers and inlet valves come up so often here. Gas, refrigerant and dryer-vent work have their own safety rules, covered below.

What appliance repair costs in Rockford in 2026

These are national ranges from Angi's 2026 cost guides and HomeGuide, each with its date on the cost page. They include parts and labor. The service call is separate: HomeGuide puts it at $70 to $130 for travel, diagnosis and the first hour, and some technicians credit a diagnostic fee toward the repair. Gas appliances run 10 to 20 percent more to repair than electric ones, HomeGuide says, because of part prices and the extra safety work.

No source publishes Rockford-only repair prices, so we do not invent one. Your technician quotes the job after diagnosis and before any work starts.

Each page lists the symptoms and causes from the manufacturers' own troubleshooting, the checks you can make before a visit, what the repair usually is and what it costs. Gas and propane appliances, sealed refrigeration systems and dryer vents have their own safety notes.

Water

Rockford's water is very hard, and your appliances notice

Every public water system here with a state total-hardness result is very hard by the U.S. Geological Survey's scale, which starts "very hard" at 180 mg/L. Illinois EPA's lab measured a median of 377 mg/L (22 grains per gallon) across Rockford's wells from 2022 to 2026, and the Rockford Water Division's own figure is 9 to 21 grains per gallon from its 39 wells.

Hard water leaves scale wherever water is heated or evaporates. GE says that over time hard-water buildup can damage dishwasher components, and that its freestanding ice makers may need cleaning as often as every six months because minerals build up on the freezing plate. Bosch dishwashers even have a code for it, E12, limescale in the heat pump. Angi notes ice maker inlet valves are prone to mineral buildup.

Every town page shows its own system's number, and the hardness table lists them all.

Error codes and warranties, brand by brand

A code on the display is the fastest clue. The brand pages translate each manufacturer's codes in its own words, explain its warranty and show where the model number is. Independent service: not affiliated with or authorized by any manufacturer.

Local homes

Older Rockford homes, gas lines and propane country

The median home in the City of Rockford was built in 1963, and 46.5% of its homes predate 1960, according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey. Across Winnebago County the median year is 1972; in Boone County it is 1986. Older houses often put the laundry in the basement, which can mean a long dryer vent run to reach an outside wall.

Gas is the norm: 84% of Winnebago County households and 78% of Boone County households heat with utility gas, which means gas is already piped to most houses for a range or dryer. In the rural townships it is a different picture. Harrison Township (76%), LeRoy Township (70%), Manchester Township (70%), Spring Township (56%) heat mostly with tank gas, and gas ranges and dryers there need an LP conversion.

Repair or replace

The honest math on repair versus replace

HomeGuide's rule of thumb: an appliance more than 10 years old, or a repair costing more than half the price of a new one, usually is not worth fixing. But lifespans differ a lot by appliance, so a 12-year-old gas range and a 12-year-old dishwasher are not the same decision.

Check the warranty first. Maytag covers parts for ten years on appliances made after 2017; Samsung and LG cover refrigerator sealed systems for five years; Speed Queen sells washers with five- and seven-year coverage. A repair that looks expensive can be mostly covered parts. The repair or replace guide goes through it.

Safety

Gas, refrigerant and dryer vents: where safety rules apply

If you smell gas

Nicor Gas says to leave immediately, avoid switches and phones that could spark, and call 888-642-6748 and 911 from outside. Illinois requires a working carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every bedroom. More

Refrigerant needs a certified tech

EPA Section 608 requires certification for anyone servicing equipment that could release refrigerant; fridges and freezers fall under Type I. Ask to see the card before sealed-system work. More

Dryer vents cause fires

USFA counts about 2,900 residential dryer fires a year, failure to clean the leading cause, peaking in January. NFPA says clean the vent yearly and keep the outside flap clear of snow. More

The old one

Getting rid of an old appliance, town by town

Illinois has banned white goods from landfills since July 1, 1994 unless their mercury switches, refrigerant and PCB components are removed (415 ILCS 5/22.28), so every hauler handles appliances differently. Rockford collects a refrigerator with your bulk items only if a licensed refrigeration technician's refrigerant-free certification is attached. Belvidere and Durand charge $50 per white good through their haulers; Cherry Valley includes one a week; Roscoe's bulk program does not take them at all.

Each town page has its rule and source, and the disposal guide puts them side by side.

How it works

How a repair visit works

  1. 1Tell us what is wrongCall or send the request form: the appliance, brand, model number if you have it, and the symptom or error code.
  2. 2A technician calls backA local technician confirms the visit window and the service call fee before coming out.
  3. 3Diagnosis in your homeThe technician finds the cause and quotes the repair. Nothing is done until you agree to the price.
  4. 4Repair or a straight answerThe repair is done on the spot when the part is on hand, or on a return trip once it arrives. If it is not worth fixing, you hear that too.

Common questions

Appliance repair in Rockford: common questions

How much does appliance repair cost in Rockford?

National 2026 cost guides put most refrigerator repairs at $150 to $400, washers at $180 to $250, dryers at $100 to $430, dishwashers at $175 to $325 and ovens at $130 to $310, plus a $70 to $130 service call that usually covers the trip, diagnosis and first hour.

Do you cover Loves Park, Machesney Park, Roscoe and Belvidere?

Yes. The service area is every city, village and township in Winnebago and Boone counties, including Loves Park, Machesney Park, Roscoe, Rockton, South Beloit, Cherry Valley, Belvidere, Poplar Grove and Capron. Each has its own page.

Is Rockford's water hard enough to affect appliances?

Yes. Illinois EPA lab samples of Rockford's wells had a median of 377 mg/L of total hardness, and the city gives 9 to 21 grains per gallon. GE says hard-water buildup can damage dishwasher components over time and that ice makers may need cleaning every six months in hard water.

Which brands do you work on?

All the major brands, including Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Bosch, Kenmore, Electrolux, Amana and Speed Queen. This is independent service, not affiliated with or authorized by any manufacturer, so in-warranty repairs should go to the manufacturer first.

Is it worth repairing an appliance over 10 years old?

Often not if the repair is expensive. HomeGuide's guideline is that appliances over 10 years old, or repairs over 50 percent of a replacement, usually aren't worth it. But a gas range lasts 15 to 17 years on InterNACHI's chart, so age alone does not decide it.

Who can repair a refrigerator's refrigerant system?

Only a technician certified under EPA Section 608. Household refrigerators and freezers fall under Type I, small appliances, and venting refrigerant on purpose is prohibited.

How do I get rid of an old refrigerator in Rockford?

Rockford picks it up with your bulk items only if a licensed refrigeration technician's certification is attached stating it is refrigerant-free. Illinois has banned white goods with their refrigerant from landfills since 1994.

How do I book a repair?

Call (815) 800-0677 or use the service request form with the appliance, brand, model number and symptom. A local technician calls back with a time and a price before any work starts.
