Dryer Repair in Rockford, IL
Updated
Short answer

No heat: the checks Whirlpool lists
- Run a heated timed cycle for 5 minutes empty, then feel inside. If it is warm, the problem is drying performance, not heat (Whirlpool).
- Air Only or Air Fluff cycles add no heat at any point.
- Electric dryers: check the home circuit breakers and that the power cord is installed correctly.
- Gas dryers: make sure the dryer is connected and the shutoff valve is open; the drum will turn but not heat if it is closed (Whirlpool).
- Venting: does the home vent line need cleaning?
If those are fine, the heating element (electric) or burner parts (gas) are next, and Whirlpool says that is a job for a professional (Whirlpool).
Takes two cycles to dry? It is usually the vent
The U.S. Fire Administration says that if heavy items like jeans and towels take a long time to dry, or clothes feel hotter than usual at the end of a cycle, a clogged vent is likely (USFA). Whirlpool says the vent behind the dryer should be rigid or flexible metal, usually 4 inches in diameter, not foil or plastic, which crush easily (Whirlpool). LG dryers with Flow Sense display d90 or d95 when they detect a 90 or 95 percent blockage in the ductwork (LG). See dryer vent cleaning.
What the repair usually is
- Not heating: $80 to $420 (heating element, thermostat or thermal fuse)
- Not spinning: $30 to $250 (belt, motor or drum rollers)
- Will not turn on: $15 to $300 (door switch, start switch or control board)
- Shuts off quickly: $25 to $300 (clogged vent or bad thermostat)
- Loud noises: $10 to $450
Angi notes that labor is often 90 percent or more of a dryer repair: a thermal fuse is a $5 to $18 part and a drive belt $14 to $32 (Angi).
Fire risk
USFA reports about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires a year, with failure to clean the leading cause at 34 percent, and fires peaking in January (USFA). NFPA adds a Rockford-relevant tip: check that the outdoor vent flap is not covered by snow (NFPA). More in dryer fire safety.

Common questions
Dryer Repair: questions
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
Whirlpool's first checks: an Air Only cycle, a tripped breaker on an electric dryer, a closed gas valve on a gas dryer, and a clogged vent. After that it is usually the heating element, a thermostat or the thermal fuse.
How much does dryer repair cost?
Angi's 2026 average is $180, with most repairs $100 to $430. A no-heat repair runs $80 to $420.
Why does my dryer take two cycles?
Most often a restricted vent. USFA says long drying times for heavy items, or clothes hotter than usual, point to a clogged exhaust vent.
What kind of vent should a dryer have?
Rigid or flexible metal, usually 4 inches in diameter, according to Whirlpool. Foil and plastic crush easily, and NFPA also recommends metal venting.
