Gas Dryer Repair in Rockford, IL
Updated
Short answer

First checks
- The gas shutoff valve behind the dryer is open when its handle is parallel to the gas pipe; Whirlpool says the drum turns but will not heat if it is closed (Whirlpool).
- An Air Only cycle never adds heat (Whirlpool).
- The vent: a crushed or lint-packed duct makes any dryer slow and can trip its safety cutoffs.
Propane (LP) dryers
GE states that its gas dryers are factory-equipped for natural gas and that most can be converted to liquid propane with an LP conversion kit, recommending a qualified installer or gas servicer do it to code (GE Appliances). Whirlpool sells a 22,000 BTU conversion kit with burner orifices and a regulator vent cap for the same purpose. In parts of rural Boone and Winnebago county most homes heat with propane; the town pages show each township's share from the Census. Tell the technician if your dryer runs on LP.
Gas safety
NFPA says gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks (NFPA). If you smell gas, Nicor Gas says to leave the area immediately, avoid anything that could spark (including light switches and phones), and call 888-642-6748 and 911 once you are away from the leak (Nicor Gas). Illinois law also requires a working carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping (430 ILCS 135/10).
Costs
Gas appliances typically cost 10 to 20 percent more to repair than electric ones, according to HomeGuide, because of higher part prices and the extra safety work (HomeGuide).
