Dryer Running but Not Heating? Whirlpool's Checks, Gas and Electric

Updated

Short answer

Whirlpool's first checks: an Air Only cycle never heats; an electric dryer can tumble cold with one breaker tripped; a gas dryer tumbles cold with the gas valve closed; and the home vent may need cleaning. After that it is a heating element, burner part, thermostat or thermal fuse, at $80 to $420 to fix.

Test it

Whirlpool: run a heated timed cycle for 5 minutes with the dryer empty, then open the door and feel inside (Whirlpool). Warm means the problem is drying performance, usually the vent or very wet loads. Whirlpool notes very wet clothes add moisture the dryer cannot easily remove; run a spin cycle first (Whirlpool).

Electric

Check the home circuit breakers and that the power cord is installed correctly (Whirlpool).

Gas

Make sure the dryer is connected to gas and the shutoff valve is open (handle parallel to the pipe); the drum turns but will not heat if the valve is closed (Whirlpool). On propane, the dryer needs an LP conversion kit (GE).

The repair

Angi: no-heat repairs $80 to $420; parts such as a thermal fuse ($5 to $18) or thermostat ($15 to $60) are cheap, and labor is most of the bill (Angi). See dryer repair or gas dryer repair.

Quick answers

Why does my dryer spin but not heat?

Check for an Air Only cycle, a tripped breaker (electric) or a closed gas valve (gas), and a clogged vent. Then the heating element, thermostat or thermal fuse.

How much does it cost to fix a dryer that won't heat?

Angi's 2026 range for no-heat repairs is $80 to $420.
