How to Reset a Garbage Disposal (InSinkErator's Red Button)

Updated

Short answer

Switch the disposer off. On most InSinkErator units, the red square overload button on the bottom, facing the floor, drops about a quarter inch when tripped: press it gently, and if it will not stay up, wait ten minutes and try again. EZ Connect models reset themselves after cooling for up to 20 minutes.
  1. Turn the disposer's switch off (InSinkErator).
  2. Find the red square button on the bottom of the unit under the sink. If tripped, it sits about 5 mm lower.
  3. Press it gently. If it does not stay up, wait ten minutes and try again.
  4. EZ Connect models: turn off at the wall switch (or unplug an air-switch model) and let it cool up to 20 minutes.

If it hums but will not turn, it is jammed; follow InSinkErator's jam instructions (InSinkErator) and never put a hand in the chamber. Angi says units eight years old or younger are usually worth repairing (Angi). See disposal repair.
